Bridging the Gap from Ayurveda to Modern Medicine
Ayurveda, roughly translated from Sanskrit, means the “science of life”, and is an ancient science of medicine that dates back about 5000 years ago. Beginning in India, this holistic approach to health and wellness has gained popularity around the world.
The Vedas, texts translated from the ancient Sanskrit, includes invaluable and relevant information about stimulating the body with exercise and work, nourishing the body with relaxation practices and proper food, and coping with stress for a natural and balanced healthy lifestyle. Ayurveda specialized in the use of medicinal plants and minerals for the treatment of 'difficult to treat' diseases in humans and animals. Yoga originated from Ayurveda and together they are gaining huge worldwide trends in recent times. What has been missing through the ages is the scientific validation using the same parameters as modern medicine, in proving the efficacy and safety of Ayurvedic treatments.
Arthritis is the # 1 cause of disability with an incidence of 25-30% of the world population. An estimated 50 million adults in the United States reported being told by a doctor that they have some form of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, or fibromyalgia. According to The Arthritis Foundation, “Arthritis is a term used to describe more than 100 different conditions that affect joints as well as other parts of the body. Arthritis is one of the most prevalent chronic health problems and the nation’s most common causes of disability.” Challenges in arthritis treatment include the significant side effects of prescription drugs and limitation of efficacy with long-term therapy. Various forms of arthritis were explained in great detail in Ayurveda. Ayurveda terms arthritis as Amavata. Arthritis is one of the most common ailment for which Ayurveda help is being sought today.
Ayurvedic plants
Use of certain plants and minerals such as gold salts, taken by mouth and applied locally to the affected joint, formed a mainstay of the therapy. Several Ayurvedic plants have been described for their ability to relieve pain, swelling and inflammation in both osteo-arthritis and in rheumatoid arthritis.
Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha or Winter Cherry) helps regulate important physiologic processes, to withstand stressors, and has antioxidant properties. Several studies have shown Withania to support the body's immune system and have the anti-inflammatory effect.
Boswellia serrata (Shallaki or Indian Frankincense) has been used as an anti-arthritic, anti-inflammatory, stimulant, and antiseptic.
Zingiber officinalis (Ginger), used in various cuisines, is a potent anti-inflammatory and gastro-intestinal tonic.
Curcuma longa (Turmeric), also widely used as a culinary flavoring agent, is acclaimed as an anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer agent.
Swertia Chirayita (Chirayita), a Himalayan herb, is used for fever, anemia, asthma and reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines in arthritis.
Nyctanthes arbor tristis (Harshingar) has been used in arthritis and sciatica since centuries.
Ananas comosus (Pineapple plant) has been described to reduce pain and swelling in rheumatoid arthritis.
Tinospora cordifolia (Guduchi or Heart-leaved Moonseed) has shown suppression of inflammation and bone/cartilage damage.
