What Affects Hormones and Hormonal Balance?

1 2 3

Hormonal balance is crucial for supporting better health. It’s not something we commonly assign to signs and symptoms of poor health, but our hormones act as the fundamental moderators of our body and many of its innate functions. They are like the undercover messengers that speak throughout our bodies.

When hormonal imbalances occur, so too will the likelihood of ill or impeded health. This may manifest as poor sleep, increased levels of stress, fatigue, skin conditions, low mood and mental focus, impaired memory, poor sex drive, and difficulty in maintaining or losing weight. These are just a few things that we may notice once our hormone levels and hormone production are affected.

What Affects Hormones and Hormonal Balance?

In essence, there is a multitude of factors that can negatively affect hormonal balance. Hormone imbalances naturally occur at certain stages of life, such as puberty, pregnancy, during menstrual cycles, and of course, menopause. These stages in life are generally difficult for many people, and particularly for those that may have medical conditions that make hormonal balance harder to achieve or maintain.

For instance, medical conditions like Diabetes and having an under-active or over-active thyroid can severely affect hormonal balance. Ultimately, any medical condition that affects the glands and the endocrine system will cause issues with hormone balance.

When your hormones are out of sync or off-balance, it is challenging to feel like ‘you’! This is why the menopause is a particularly trying time for women- and why the process of menopause is aptly named “the change."

Alongside these internal or natural factors that affect our hormones, several things in our environment and external world contribute to hormonal imbalance- and all these things negatively impact our health in one way or another. Particularly, many imbalances are caused by excess estrogen.

There are three forms of estrogen: Estradiol, estrone, and estriol. Estradiol and estrone are the two most potent forms of estrogen. A common imbalance in women occurs when a surplus of estradiol and estrone is present without enough progesterone to maintain balance. This condition is referred to as “estrogen dominance”.

Estrogen dominance can be exacerbated by numerous factors these include:

Excess weight:

Body fat stores estrogen, therefore, a higher measure of body fat means higher levels of estrogen. Due to the elevation of estrogen levels, the ratio of the two hormones (progesterone and estrogen) can be significantly thrown off by the extra weight.

Hormonal birth control:

When the addition of artificial estrogen causes an imbalance with lowered progesterone levels, the body can enter into estrogen dominance. Progesterone-based birth control pills can also inhibit the body’s natural production of progesterone. The body becomes reliant on the regular supplementation, and when birth control stops, there can be a depletion of the progesterone that is needed for hormonal balance.

Modern environment:

The world we live in presents us with a constant bombardment of xenoestrogens each day. Xenoestrogens are chemicals that, while structurally different, interact with our bodies similarly to estradiol or estrone.

The list of xenoestrogen sources is extensive: car exhaust fumes, pesticides, nail polish, Styrofoam, plastics, household cleaners, and a thousand other seemingly benign things that surround us every day. The buildup of these estrogen-like chemicals effectively raises total estrogen, making Estrogen Dominance a big problem in the modern world.

Not just women!

Hormonal imbalance is not just a female problem! Excess weight and xenoestrogens can also lead to estrogen dominance symptoms in men.

So, how can we balance out excess estrogen? SM Nutrition has a solution; it is the secret to managing excess estrogen!

A health supplement named “DIM” addresses the problems associated with estrogen dominance by helping your body metabolize excess potent estrogen.

How DIM Works

DIM Di-indolyl Methane is a powerful aromatase inhibitor that's also found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower. It strengthens the body’s natural hormonal balance by supporting the body’s metabolism of excess estrogen.

DIM for Skin Balance and Combating Acne

DIM can provide support for hormonal/cystic acne because of how susceptible our skin is to hormonal health. Even small imbalances can make a difference. When DIM addresses estrogen imbalances, the change to skin quality can be dramatic. Thousands have put acne behind them with the support of DIM as a skincare supplement.

DIM for Menopause

As menopause begins, several hormone levels begin to fluctuate and decline. The major hormones involved in this process are Estrogen and Progesterone. Imbalances in these hormones are what often cause the symptoms of menopause.

A common symptom-causing imbalance during menopause occurs when a surplus of estradiol and estrone is present without corresponding ratios of progesterone, leading to estrogen dominance.

DIM works with your body to help metabolize the hormones that are too abundant, namely the two problematic types of estrogen: Estradiol and estrone. As the body metabolizes the heightened levels of estrogen, hormonal balance is restored. The result is a youthful feel and minimization of the unwanted symptoms of menopause.

DIM for Weight Loss

Elevated estrogen levels cause an increase in body fat. The differing levels of Estrogen in men and women are largely responsible for the natural body fat differences between the sexes. By using DIM to metabolize excess potent estrogen, you may be able to decrease extra fat storage caused by hormone imbalance.
