Omega 3 - responsible for your health
If you were stranded on a desert island and granted an unlimited supply of one nutritional supplement, what would it be? You would probably choose a “multi-tasker” supplement; one that helps your health and well-being in a number of different ways. Even if your desert island doesn’t come equipped with a Whole Food Market or GNC store, you might still have access to the ultimate “multi-tasker” nutrients – as long as you can catch fish. Omega -3 fatty acids, most famously found in fish oils, are a family of nutrients that provide an amazing array of health benefits across numerous body systems.
Backed by evidence-based science, Omega-3 fatty acids are shown to support human health, prevention, and management of cardiovascular disease, joint inflammation, brain and immune function and other chronic disorders. There has been a surge in interest amongst clinicians, pharmacists, dietitians, and other health professionals.
The key to better health is learning the difference between healthy and unhealthy nutrients. The choices you make can greatly affect your health. Making a few simple healthy and nutritious changes in dietary choices can have a profound and positive impact on one’s health, wellbeing and energy level. For example, it’s common knowledge: not all fats are bad.
Healthy fats are unsaturated fats (mono and poly), Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. In fact, Omega 3 fatty acids are considered to be the “good fats” which help to balance the “ bad fats” in your diet. The Omega 3 fatty acids include alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and dosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The good source of this fat come from fish, ground flax seeds, extra virgin oil, soybeans, kiwis, chia and walnuts. They help the body absorb fat-soluble antioxidant micronutrients like vitamins A, E, D, and K, and lycopene from the carotenoid group.
Unhealthy fats are saturated fats and trans fatty acids (trans fats), like butter or margarine. Those fats contribute to heart disease, stroke, high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, hypertension, and obesity.
We are what we eat
There are trillions upon trillions of cells in human body. We are what we eat-especially when it comes to our cells. In each and every one, fatty acids form membranes, which are actively involved, in a number of sophisticated tasks, including hormone and immune responses. When the body creates cell membranes, it uses whatever fatty acids are available. Consuming excessive saturated fats can make cell membranes unhealthy.
Unsaturated fats like Omega 3, however, are excellent building materials - enabling the body to form cell membranes that are healthy. As the results, Omega 3 fatty acids are considered some of the most important fatty acids you need for cellular health.
Omega 3s’ nutritional support for heart health and brain health is well-known, but who knew these nutrients were associated with so many other areas of wellness? Researchers continue to investigate Omega 3s’ far-reaching impact on human health, so more pleasant surprises may be soon. As Omega3s’ help to promote well-being within our bodies’ evry cell, many who focus on Omega 3 intake start to feel much, much better.

3 easy way to increase Omega-3 Fish Oil intake
1. Increase fish intake: Don’t forget the most famous source of Omega 3s: fish. The best choice: tuna, salmon, sardines, halibut, shrimps, scallops, trout, and herring. Note: Fatty fish, such tuna, mackerel and halibut contain a lot of fatty acids that reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. However, some species contain poisonous substances such as mercury and PCBs, which might be dangerous, particularly to pregnant women and children. Unfortunately, mercury risk in Omega-3-rich fish makes it harder to eat to gain Omega 3 health benefits.
2. Increase plant based foods with the highest amount of Omega-3 fatty acids. Flaxseeds are probably the most well know plant-based source of Omega-3. Chia seeds or Hemp seeds provide a healthy dose of Omega 3 as well. In fact, chia has the highest level of omega-3s of any known plant –based source.
Here is some satisfying Omega 3 shake to try:
2 tablespoons chia seeds (black or white)
1 cup purified coconut water
2 cups fresh or frozen mixed berries (such as blackberries, blueberries)
1-cup plain unsweetened almond milk
2 tablespoons organic hone
Preparation
Whisk together the chia seeds and water and let stand for about 20 minutes. Makes about 1 1/3 cups chia gel. Place the chia gel, frozen or fresh berries, almond milk, honey, vanilla, and avocado in a blender. Cover and blend on high until thick and creamy. Enjoy!
3. Omega-3 Supplements: Eating chia shake for breakfast and fish a couple of times a week for dinner can be expensive. Supplements offer the health –promoting benefits of Omega-3s plus guarantee safety (mercury –free) and convenience.
