Uncomplicate healthier living

The best way to defeat the numbing ambivalence of middle age is to surprise yourself - by pulling off some cartwheel of thought or action never even imagined at a younger ageGail Sheehy.

Indeed, getting older may seem like a curse to some. Yet others, such as quoted above, see it as a new opportunity. A chance to take a chance – experience something new.

Of course, every day we are above ground is a day to do something meaningful, different, and possibly frightening. New experiences are always available, and great things could be just around the corner.

What does it take to embrace your age as a silly number and go for the new and the bold? How do you take considerable action and make significant changes in your life? Well, as the late, great George Washington put it:

From thinking proceeds speaking; thence to acting is often a single step. But how irrevocable and tremendous!

Men and women have been shaky, nervous, or downright afraid of taking action for centuries. Often, the needed action is obvious, yet the fear of failure is still there.

“What if I don’t make it?”

“What if they laugh at me?”

Thank goodness people throughout history haven’t let the fear of “what if” control their lives—had the great inventors let fear overtake them, the world could look quite different. Would we still drive horse and buggy and communicate via snail mail? Possibly, but here we are, 2024, ripe with innovation.

So, what is the significant action you’ve been putting off?

What’s your plan to surprise yourself?

For many this year, they had a plan to get healthier. This is a noble goal and one worth diving headlong into. As Mr. Washington said, there are a few steps to action, so let’s dive into how to take charge of your health simply, with easy steps anyone can perform.

As long as you don’t complicate it, there’s no need to fear failure. Let’s get a plan together, get healthy, and maybe, just maybe… surprise yourself.

Fool-proof steps to a healthier life

Taking a step is irrevocable; you can’t take it back, and there are no do-overs. The steps to a healthier life only contain steps you will not want to take back. This should make taking action a little easier. Once your mind is made over to live a fuller, happier, healthier life, you’ll wonder why you didn’t act sooner.

This leads us to step one, making your mind over.

You must have it in your head that you will be better off with the changes that must be made in your life. Otherwise, you will never take them. You might say to yourself,  “Nah, I don’t really need to eat healthier.” Or, “What good will walking every day do anyway,” or the real doozy, “I won’t feel that much better, will I?”

The answer is yes, yes you will.

If you find yourself on the fence about whether you should take the plunge and change your life for the better, think about where you are now compared to how you felt ten years ago. True, ten years ago, everything about you was younger and maybe a bit more vibrant. This should give you more reason to want to feel that way again because it is possible.

When our bodies are younger, they tend to forgive our indiscretions easily. Eating the second cupcake or having another scoop of ice cream is not as big a deal. Our metabolism is faster, and when we are younger, what we will feel like in ten years often doesn’t cross our mind. We are living for the moment.

Now that age has crept up on us, we may not be as spry and active as we were. That second cupcake may sit on us a little heavier. You may also find yourself with less energy or drive. This is a normal part of aging if you are not taking steps to live healthier tomorrow than you are today.

So, use those memories to help make your mind over. How did you feel ten years ago? How much energy did you have? What would it be like to feel that way now? How would your life improve?

Maybe you have children or grandchildren who would love for you to be able to keep up with them. Or perhaps your partner would like to see you more active. That all starts with knowing that it’s possible to improve. Once you know that a healthier you would be happier, the most significant part of the battle is won. Now, what are the next simple steps to living healthier?

Get up and move.

Okay, this one may get beaten to death in every article you read about living a healthier life. Despite the seeming monotony with this topic - there’s good reason for this to be drilled into our heads – it works.

In 1988, a  fellow named Richard Simmons took the idea of getting people to move and live healthier to a different level. He created a video series called “Sweatin’ To the Oldies.” In this video, he developed aerobic dance workouts to hit songs from the 1950’s and 1960’s.

You may say, “Yeah, well, what’s your point?” The point is that this was a sensation, and copies of it are still being sold today. Maybe it sounds a bit old-fashioned, but it worked. People found a way to get out there and move, sweat, and exercise in a way they enjoyed.

That’s what you need to do. Find some form of physical activity you enjoy and increase how much you do. Nearly all fitness experts recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity weekly exercise.

This works out to be 30 minutes daily, five days a week. The goal is to break a sweat while still being able to carry on a conversation. Make it consistent. That’s the biggie. Consistency over time will create results. As you start, listen to your body and allow yourself rest and recovery between sessions.

So, whether dancing to music you love, biking, running, or hiking, find something you enjoy doing and ramp up the intensity enough to get some sweat rolling.

As you increase your physical exercise, you must fill up your body with the proper fuel. You don’t want to run out of steam as you're just starting. That’s why nutrition is the next thing you should consider when improving your life. Remember, you can’t get good out unless you put good in.

Fuel your body with intention.

An apple a day keeps the … well, you know the rest. And you certainly know that you should eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. The more color, the better.

So, you need plenty of fruits and non-starchy vegetables, such as broccoli, carrots, and fresh spinach. They are high in fiber, low in calories, and loaded with vitamins and minerals that help keep your body running smoothly.

Omega 3, 6, and 9 are critical for an active, healthy lifestyle. These will help you fight inflammation, improve your mental health, and are super healthy for your heart. Don’t go without a healthy dose of Omega’s.

Also, you should have a solid portion of lean protein daily. This protein will help bolster your metabolism, and the amino acids will help repair and rejuvenate your cells. The recommended amount of protein varies, yet the average seems to be one gram per kilogram of body weight. You can get this from chicken and fish; there are even vegan sources to consider.

Last of all, cut out the junk. You know what this means. Far less refined sugars, processed food, and anything with ingredients you can’t pronounce.

So, there it is, just as you’ve heard repeatedly, “diet and exercise” are the keys to a healthy life. It sounds simple, right? As you know, not everything is black and white. Sometimes life gets in the way. What seems simple can become difficult.

Sure, you can have your mind made up and be genuinely committed to leading a healthier life. You could even start increasing your physical activity. Eating correctly and receiving properly balanced nutrition can be a challenge, though.

With work, school, children, and schedules, many things can get in the way of eating healthy. Sitting down to a properly balanced meal is not always so simple. Finding the right foods with the right amounts of vitamins, Omega, protein, and healthy carbs can sometimes be impossible.
