Your Feet Have Been Keeping Up: Taking a Fresh Look at Everyday Footwear

Reading time:  6 min read

You know a shoe is trouble when you have to plan your day around when you can take it off. They might be the shoes that look absolutely perfect with your favorite outfit, or the ones you reach for when you want to feel a little more put together. But somewhere between leaving the house and actually getting through the day, you start to think about how sore your feet feel. Your weight begins to shift, you sit down whenever you have the chance, and you begin to wonder how something that looked so good a few hours prior is now the very thing that you’re so eager to take off.

Many people struggle to find a comfortable shoe, and most of the time, they have to choose between practicality and personal style. Supportive shoes usually come with a very distinct look or an orthopedic appearance, and fashionable options often leave very little room for support.

But imagine that these two worlds didn’t have to live separately.

This is where Balanz Orthotics come in. This brand is designed around the idea that footwear can be designed with intent without forcing women to sacrifice the way that they want to present themselves to the world.

Your Feet Have a Lot Going On

Our feet are one of those things that we don’t even think about until they start feeling painful or uncomfortable.

Think about your average day. It typically involves a number of steps, changes in direction, periods of standing, and transitions between different kinds of surfaces. Most of the time, we simply expect our feet to keep up with all the hard work.

Every step involves more than the foot itself. The way the foot meets the ground affects how forces are handled as the body moves, which is one reason foot orthoses are designed with more in mind than simply adding a layer of cushioning.

That is why foot support is more complicated than simply adding an insole. The design has to work with the way a person naturally moves.

That thinking is central to Balanz Orthotics, founded by podiatrist Dr. Jose Hilario, who brings more than 20 years of clinical experience to the brand’s biomechanical approach to foot support. Rather than focusing solely on the medial arch, the design also emphasizes the outer portion of the foot while incorporating medial arch support. According to the company, the design is patent pending and reflects Dr. Hilario’s clinical experience and patient outcomes.

Why Finding Comfortable Women’s Shoes Can Be So Difficult

Picture a woman getting ready for a long day.

She’s got places to be and errands to run and is probably standing and walking more than she initially realized. She opens up her closet and starts eliminating all the uncomfortable options. The shoes that scream beauty are uncomfortable, and the comfortable shoes are far too bulky. The pair that fits her orthotics is too big for the outfit that she originally had planned. She reaches for the shoes that feel like they’d give her the least trouble, and she heads out the door.

There was no drastic choice to be made, but this kind of small compromise can happen repeatedly and ultimately shapes what someone wears, how long they can stay on their feet, and how much thought they give to their appearance.

This kind of frustration is what inspired the creation of a women’s footwear line that is also linked to the brand’s orthotic philosophy. The original orthotic design grew out of a practical problem Dr. Hilario repeatedly encountered in clinical practice. Earlier options could be difficult to fit into women’s shoes, and some patients even had to size up by one to one and a half sizes. Dress shoes presented another challenge.

The solution was not to make yet another orthotic-looking shoe, but rather to create footwear that could bring together both function and appearance. This approach led to the NZ Footwear Collection. This collection includes several colorways, including Multi, Black, Champagne, and Off-White.

The wide range of colors makes the collection feel adaptable to different personal styles. It feels familiar and can fit naturally into real life rather than expecting people to change their lives to fit the shoes.

Can Supportive Footwear Actually Look Stylish?

For years, footwear has been divided into two camps: the shoes you wear because you love how they look and the ones you wear because your feet need them. If a shoe looks good, then comfort automatically becomes secondary, and in reverse, when a shoe is designed specifically for support, then appearance can become secondary. These two aspects are treated as if they belong in two different categories.

The NZ Sophie Collection | Multi takes a more contemporary approach, with a multicolored design that feels at home alongside modern everyday wardrobes. For women who don’t want to separate function from personal style, the collection offers an expressive option that reflects the brand’s focus on combining everyday style with its biomechanical approach to support.

The NZ Sophie Collection | Black offers an understated alternative for women who prefer a more classic look. The black colorway, finished with subtle silver detailing, is easy to work into an everyday wardrobe without competing with the rest of an outfit. Designed with the same fashion-conscious sensibility and support philosophy as the wider collection, it offers a practical choice for women who want their shoes to feel as considered as the clothes they pair them with. From casual days to more polished looks, it is the kind of versatile style that can move easily from one outfit to the next.

Dr. Jose Hilario’s more than 20 years of podiatric experience helped shape an approach that centers on foot mechanics and everyday movement. According to the brand, a retrospective review of 1,060 patients found that 82% reported relief within 30 days and more than 97% reported being pain-free by day 90. These findings provide insight into reported patient outcomes, but they do not mean that every person will experience the same results.

The point isn’t that style should never involve a compromise. It’s that comfort and appearance don’t always have to be opposing choices.
