When the House Finally Goes Quiet

Reading time:  7 min read

At some point after midnight, our homes begin to reveal their real inhabitants. There is a mug beside the sink that nobody bothered to put away, and a crooked pair of shoes left near the back door.

This is the hour when the performance of the day falls away. There is only the small domestic choreography of trying to get comfortable: turning the pillow over, opening a window, closing it again, checking whether the dog has water, looking at the clock and immediately regretting it.

The strange thing about these moments is how much they reveal. Much of our daily routine is spent adjusting. People adjust the temperature, the lighting, the volume of the television, the position of a chair. They adjust their schedules around children, colleagues, traffic, ageing parents and animals who have very strong opinions about where they would prefer to sleep.

The New Luxury Is Knowing What Belongs in the Evening

Carrying the day too far into the night can be exhausting, and not necessarily physically. The body can be tired while the mind remains irritatingly available. It reopens conversations that ended hours ago and invents a problem with no immediate solution.

That is partly why the language around sleep has become so elaborate. There are trackers, sleep scores, weighted blankets, cooling mattresses, blue-light glasses, meditation apps and carefully engineered bedtime routines. A basic human function has acquired the infrastructure of a specialist hobby. There is another way of looking at it.

The most interesting development in contemporary wellness is the growing attention to the things people do to make an ordinary night feel more manageable, and it is where a product such as Public Hemp Co.’s Snooze Button makes more sense than it does as simply another CBD product.

Snooze Button and the Ritual of Switching Off

The name does most of the work. “Snooze Button” belongs to that peculiar territory between wanting more sleep and wanting the world to wait. It is the button pressed by someone who has no intention of negotiating with morning just yet.

The brand’s version is a vanilla-mint tincture formulated with full-spectrum CBD, CBG and CBN. Its 1800mg Full Strength formula contains 900mg full-spectrum CBD, 600mg CBG and 300mg CBN; the 3600mg Extra Strength contains 1800mg CBD, 1200mg CBG and 600mg CBN. The one-ounce tincture uses organic MCT oil, full-spectrum hemp extract and organic mint and vanilla natural flavorings.

The company’s own description is deliberately tied to the familiar experience of a restless mind and difficulty staying asleep. It also positions the tincture as an alternative to the grogginess and brain fog associated, in its description, with traditional sleep aids.

Public Hemp Co. Takes Its Hemp Back to the Beginning

The company describes itself as “Farm to Package,” meaning it grows, manufactures and sells its own products rather than sourcing finished cannabinoid ingredients from an entirely separate operation. Its FAQ says the hemp is grown without pesticides, herbicides or harsh chemicals, with the crop seeded, planted and harvested by hand.

Hemp has become an ingredient that can be discussed in remarkably abstract terms. CBD, CBG, CBN, full spectrum, broad spectrum, isolate: the vocabulary can make the plant disappear beneath the terminology. Farm-to-package puts some of the physical world back into the conversation.

There is a field somewhere behind the bottle. There are weeds that must be removed manually. There are harvests and tractors. Public Hemp Co. even gives its tractors names: Scarlett, Ruby and Betty. It is an unusually specific detail for a company selling something that could otherwise be reduced to a percentage printed on a label. It gives the product an origin story without requiring the reader to be sold a fantasy about nature.

The company also makes certificates of analysis and product ingredients available, allowing customers to look beyond the front of the bottle and into what is being sold.

Our Pets Have Become Part of the Wellness Conversation

Then there is the animal asleep somewhere in the house.

There is something revealing about the rise of pet wellness. People who once thought of a dog as a dog now know the precise location of its favorite sleeping place, the food it refuses to eat, the sound it makes when it wants to go outside and the difference between ordinary barking and the bark reserved for the delivery driver.

The household has become a shared emotional ecosystem. If the dog is restless, someone notices. If it is nervous during a storm, the television gets turned up and if age makes the stairs harder, a bed moves downstairs.

Furry Friend sits inside this increasingly attentive relationship between people and their animals.

The one-ounce pet tincture contains 150mg of broad-spectrum CBD distillate and 150mg of CBG isolate, with 5mg CBD and 5mg CBG per dropper. It also contains organic MCT coconut oil, wild Alaskan salmon oil and hemp extract, and is described by the company as THC-free.

The company lists anxious or nervous pets, separation stress, achy joints and overactive jitteriness among the situations the product is intended for.

The salmon oil is an especially telling inclusion.

A pet product could easily have been reduced to a cannabinoid formula in a bottle. Instead, the product has been made recognizably pet-oriented, down to an ingredient whose smell and taste make more sense in the world of an animal than the increasingly sophisticated flavor language of human wellness.

What a Bottle Says About the Way People Live Now

Snooze Button is about the human inability to switch off. Furry Friend is about the animal that cannot tell anyone why it is unsettled.

The wellness industry has spent years selling aspiration: the ideal morning, the immaculate kitchen, the perfect skin, the disciplined body, the life in which every habit appears effortless.

Real life contains the dog that refuses to settle during a thunderstorm and the person staring at the ceiling because tomorrow’s meeting has already started in their head. It contains a bottle beside the bed, a pet bowl on the kitchen floor and a house that looks slightly untidy because everyone living in it has been busy being alive.

Public Hemp Co.’s products belong to that version of wellness. The company is based around CBD and CBG products and extends its range across tinctures, flower and pre-rolls, topicals and gummies. Its broader positioning centers on being well rested, calm and focused, but the individual products are much more specific: sleep, recovery, relaxation, pets.

The Most Interesting Wellness Products Are the Ones That Fit into Real Life

It can be so easy to give in to the temptation of judging a wellness product by the size of the promise attached to it. The bigger the claim, the more transformative it sounds, but the products people live with tend to have a different quality. The bottle becomes associated with a moment.

This is particularly relevant with hemp products, where responsible use requires a degree of attention. The company states that its products have not been approved by the FDA and are not intended to treat, cure or prevent health conditions or disorders. It advises consulting a physician before using hemp or CBD products alongside prescription medication and recommends consulting a veterinarian for pets taking medication.

That caveat does not weaken the story. It makes the story more credible. A tincture is not a substitute for medical care, and it does not need to pretend to be one.

Back in the Quiet House

Later, the house becomes still again. The mug is still beside the sink. The shoes are still by the door. The dog has stopped moving.

The person who was awake earlier does not suddenly have a perfectly organized life. Tomorrow will still contain emails, traffic, unfinished tasks and things that cannot be controlled. There will probably be another night when sleep refuses to arrive on schedule. For a few hours, none of that matters.

The interesting thing about a quiet house is that it does not look particularly different from a busy one. Only the purpose of everything has changed. During the day, a home is a place where life happens. At night, it becomes a place where life is allowed to stop happening for a while.
