Roots, Rituals & a Little Jamaican Magic: The Mane Event Is Taking Care of Your Hair

Reading time:  6 min read

Hair carries history.

Your hair is something that can bring up memories of your mother sitting behind you with a comb. It can bring back the smell of coconut oil melting between your palms; it can remind you of the times that your hairstyle made you feel good and the times that it simply didn’t.

For many people navigating the world with textured hair, natural hair care is about much more than styling. Textured hair is something they’ve been told needed to be managed, tamed, straightened, hidden, or constantly fixed.

With that mindset, the way you care for your hair can change dramatically.

It becomes less about giving your hair what it needs and more about forcing your hair to behave in a particular manner.

There is something refreshing about returning to the basics. An oil, a few intentional moments of your attention, a botanical scent, and your fingers gently running against your scalp, through your strands rather than pushing through another step in a jam-packed hair care routine.

This approach feels less like fixing and more like remembering.

And Then, Something Started to Grow

Tamalia Aromatherapy is a Jamaican-owned small business that was created around handcrafted hair, scalp, beard, and skin oils inspired by Caribbean roots. And so, the story begins. It starts with the frustration of seeing natural ingredients everywhere, while products typically targeted toward textured hair rely on ingredients that simply don’t reflect the kind of care that the founder wanted for her own hair.

She began experimenting.

Her own hair journey began at about four inches and eventually grew to more than 25 inches. What began as mixing oils for personal use eventually grew into something much larger. Before she decided to leave her job in the medical field, bottle designs, packaging ideas, and the website were already on the go. And by her final week at her job, she had already sold her first six bottles.

Imagine a young woman standing in front of the mirror, trying to separate her hair into sections before ultimately applying oil. Nothing dramatic is happening. It’s simply the realization that this can be something that she genuinely looks forward to. There is perhaps a scent that lingers as her hands move slow and steady. For just a few moments, the time is completely her own. No emails. No phones. No to-do list.

It seems like a small part of the experience, but those are often the moments that make a routine worth returning to. The ritual becomes about more than the ingredients inside the bottle; it creates an intentional moment of calm.

Tamalia Aromatherapy describes its formulas as small-batch, plant-based blends combining botanical oils and essential oils with aromatherapy elements.

There is some research that focuses on the sensory side of the experience. A randomized controlled trial published in 2020 suggests that participants who received a specific lavender aromatherapy massage intervention experienced improvement in some measures of work-related stress and burnout immediately after the intervention. This is not to say that a hair oil containing lavender will be able to treat stress or other health conditions, but it does serve as an interesting reminder that scent and the simple act of slowing down can become a meaningful part of someone’s everyday routine.

Back to the Roots

When it comes to plant oils, there is something refreshing about how uncomplicated the routine can be. Textured hair often has very different styling and maintenance needs from one person to the next. What feels right depends on porosity, density, curl pattern, length, protective styles, washing routine, and personal preferences.

This is why a simple approach to scalp care and hair conditioning can be easier to incorporate into a natural hair care routine.

One of the brand’s signature offerings is Likkle Sprout, a hair oil formulated for natural hair and textured hair routines. “Likkle” is a Jamaican Patois expression commonly used to mean “little.” At 2 ounces, the bottle offers a smaller way to try the oil before committing to a larger size.

The formula contains a blend of botanical oils and an aromatic essential-oil blend:

  • Jamaican black castor oil: A rich oil traditionally used in natural hair care routines.
  • Argan and jojoba oils: lightweight-feeling botanical oils commonly used to condition and soften hair.
  • Rosehip, avocado, coconut, and olive oils: contribute additional botanical oils to the blend.
  • Black seed oil and vitamin E: round out the blend.
  • Peppermint, rosemary, lavender, tea tree, and eucalyptus: bring the aromatic component that gives the application its distinctive sensory quality.

Start by lightly misting the hair with water, then section it before applying the oil. Apply a small amount directly to the scalp, working a reasonable amount through the hair shaft and ends.

Hair care doesn’t always need another step. Sometimes, hair care can be defined as making an existing step feel intentional enough that you actually want to keep doing it.

“Natural” does not mean proven. A 2022 systematic review of 22 studies found the strongest evidence for coconut oil’s role in reducing protein loss and helping address brittle hair, while the evidence for castor oil’s ability to support hair quality is much weaker. You cannot simply expect oils to offer drastic growth changes. Instead, you should view them as part of a conditioning and grooming routine. The results may vary from person to person, but an oil doesn’t need to guarantee growth in order to find its place within your hair care routine.

The Other Hair We Care For

When hair care comes into the conversation, the focus is usually on the scalp. Facial hair has its own set of everyday considerations. A beard can sometimes feel coarse, dry, unruly, or just overlooked. The skin beneath the beard is also something that is easily forgotten during the routine, especially when grooming consists of more than just a quick trim and wash.

The Beard Oil offers the same botanical approach and brings it into the world of men’s grooming. This blend focuses on a carefully selected combination of oils that can condition the beard and moisturize the skin beneath it:

  • Fractionated coconut oil: Provides a smooth-feeling base.
  • Jojoba and argan oils: Help give the beard a conditioned, groomed feel.
  • Rosehip and black castor oils: Add richness to the botanical blend.
  • Cedarwood: Contributes a warm, grounded aroma.
  • Peppermint and eucalyptus: Create a fresh, invigorating sensory profile.
  • Lavender and black seed oil: Complete the aromatic and botanical combination.

Start with a clean, lightly damp beard; apply a reasonable amount; massage it through the skin and beard; and then finish your routine by combing or brushing through it.

While this may be considered grooming, it is also a small daily ritual that can make getting ready feel less automatic, which allows you a moment that is truly your own.

Beauty doesn’t always need more bottles, more steps, or more empty promises. Sometimes, the most meaningful routines are simply the ones that feel realistic enough to repeat. A few minutes spent caring for your hair or beard can turn an ordinary task into something more intentional, something that belongs to you.

Maybe coming home to your hair is about learning to care for it differently.
