Coffee First, Function Second: A More Thoughtful Way to Enjoy Your Daily Coffee

Reading time:  8 min read

The coffee’s nearly ready when the first inklings of the day start to vie for your attention. The lunchbox still needs packing, there’s a message that’s come in which can’t wait until later, and the washing machine is beeping from down the corridor. Somewhere in the midst of all that, the smell of freshly made coffee is wafting through the kitchen. For a few minutes there’s something quite comforting about the ritual itself: the sound of the machine, the warmth of the mug and that first sip before the day really gets going.

Coffee has a way of becoming part of your life without you even really thinking about it. Some people will have a strong cup of coffee before they go to work; others will have a cup in the afternoon as a break from the day’s activities. It’s not just about the caffeine really; it’s about the flavor, the comfort of it, and the pleasure of going back to something you know and love.

That sense of familiarity is a great entry point for functional coffee. Rather than creating a completely new health habit, you’re simply adding in some functional ingredients to an existing one.

When the Coffee Still Comes First

Functional beverages have come under the spotlight as a new way of approaching day-to-day wellness. Mushroom coffee is one such example, taking the form of coffee to which functional mushroom extracts are added. The interest in these ingredients doesn’t necessarily mean that coffee drinkers are looking to give up on the taste of their coffee or to change the way they make it.

SmartDrip Coffee was founded by Rashawn Eugene Vaughn in San Pedro, CA, with the philosophy of coffee first and function second. It’s the South Bay’s first and only mushroom coffee company, and it’s all about combining real, micro-roasted coffee with functional mushrooms and botanical extracts.

The point is that coffee is an experience as much as it is a drink. The aroma, the roast, the body, and the flavor all determine whether you actually look forward to drinking it. A functional blend can introduce some new ingredients, but the cup underneath still has to be good.

A Familiar Brew With a Different Ingredient Story

For the coffee purist who likes their coffee strong, dark, and properly brewed, SmartDrip is a good place to start. Their flagship product is FocusDrip, which is ground coffee with Reishi mushroom and Panax ginseng extracts. Both of those ingredients have a history of traditional use, but the inclusion of them in a coffee product is no guarantee of any particular health benefits.

Reishi has long been part of the Eastern health and wellness tradition and is generally associated with balance and general well-being. Panax ginseng has likewise been used for centuries in the context of preparations for vitality and stamina. That’s why they have a place in the functional beverage space, though the appeal of FocusDrip is obviously also down to the simple fact that it’s a very good cup of coffee.

The blend is available in both French and Italian roasts, providing two very different taste profiles. The French roast is a combination of Costa Rican and Colombian Arabica, which gives a smooth, quite bold coffee. That may be the one you go for if you like a full-flavored cup in the morning. The Italian roast is a blend of Vietnamese and Sumatran coffees and is a much deeper, stronger, and more robust coffee.

These differences give the person drinking the coffee the opportunity to choose according to their own preferences rather than having to view mushroom coffee as a single entity. Roast character is still part of the equation, as it would be when selecting any other ground coffee.

FocusDrip is available as packaged grounds and in compostable single-serve pour-over sachets. The sachets are a very practical option for people who like to have freshly brewed coffee but don’t always have access to their normal coffee-making equipment. Just add hot water, a cup, and a bit of time, and the whole coffee-making process can go from your kitchen to your office desk or hotel room.

When a Coffee Break Calls for Chocolate

Not everyone wants a dark roast first thing in the morning. Some people will prefer a smoother coffee, especially when it’s being consumed as an afternoon coffee or as a more relaxed coffee.

SmartDrip’s Four Mushroom Mocha Latte is a blend of Reishi, Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, and Chaga mushroom extracts with cocoa, coconut milk creamer, and monk fruit. It’s all about the creamy, chocolatey flavor rather than the flavor of black coffee.

The four mushrooms each have their own niche in the wider functional ingredient world. Lion’s Mane is the one you see in the cognitive health space; Cordyceps is the one in the energy/physical performance space. Chaga has the antioxidants in it, and Reishi has a long history of traditional use. Those are the associations, but they don’t equate to any proven clinical benefits from drinking this latte.

What sets the product apart from a practical point of view is the combination of the extracts with the usual mocha ingredients. Cocoa provides the chocolate flavor, the coconut milk creamer the creaminess, and monk fruit the sweetness. It doesn’t contain Panax ginseng, so it is distinctly different from FocusDrip.

Packaged in individual sticks, the Four Mushroom Mocha Latte is a quick-to-make option that can be enjoyed either hot or over ice.

Beyond the Cup: SmartDrip’s Café Creations

SmartDrip’s approach to coffee goes well beyond the packaged blends with the café creations. The Four Mushroom Mocha Latte is the base for The Coop, which is a handcrafted drink. This is the Four Mushroom Mocha blend with some honey and a further mushroom boost. Cold foam and a dusting of cocoa complete the drink. The drink is a perfect example of how a functional coffee can be part of a much wider café experience. It’s not just about the ingredients; it’s about the preparation, the balance, and the finish that creates the drink.

Another example of the company’s personality is The Arthur Douglass. SmartDrip sees it as the “Arnold Palmer of coffee” in that it’s a drink that people will know and will order by name. The drink is three shots of robust espresso poured over a tall glass of ice. A touch of honey for sweetness, some smooth cold foam, and a dusting of cocoa to finish. It’s meant to be strong and refreshing, with a touch of sweetness to temper the espresso.

A signature drink that develops its own identity.

A coffee shop can become memorable not just for the beans it uses but for the drinks that people come to associate with it.

A More Grounded Approach to Everyday Wellness

The whole debate around functional coffee is part of a wider fascination with the ingredients we eat and the habits we adopt. It’s perfectly legitimate to be interested in mushroom extracts and botanicals in particular when they’re in a drink that’s familiar. It’s equally important to be realistic about what to expect.

Traditional use and the emerging research can give you grounds to look at an ingredient, but that doesn’t in itself mean that the finished drink will achieve the outcome in question. Claims around concentration, energy, and immunity need to be looked at very carefully against the available evidence and taking into consideration the formulation.

Functional coffee doesn’t in any way replace the fundamentals of good health. Good nutrition, adequate sleep, regular exercise and appropriate medical care are all still important. Anyone who is pregnant, has a pre-existing medical condition or is taking medication should seek medical advice prior to using any product containing a concentrated mushroom or botanical extract.

Within that wider picture, SmartDrip provides another way of thinking about a daily drink. The products are not positioned as a substitute for healthy living; they are positioned as coffee choices that deliver the familiar flavor with the addition of purposeful ingredients. That’s a more realistic starting point than to expect one drink to change how you feel or how you function.

A Little More Thought in the Daily Cup

The appeal of functional mushroom coffee is in its ability to build on something you already know. You don’t have to give up your morning coffee or turn your coffee break into yet another thing to take with you to manage. A very bold French or Italian roast, a portable pour-over sachet or a creamy mocha can all be ways of enjoying that same ritual.

With FocusDrip and the Four Mushroom Mocha Latte, SmartDrip delivers two very different experiences under the same umbrella of real coffee, purposeful ingredients and attention to flavor. The café range takes that concept even further in terms of what a drink can be.

Back in the kitchen, the lunchbox is finally packed, the messages can wait a moment, and the washing machine has stopped beeping. The coffee is still hot. Sometimes a more considered daily ritual doesn’t start with one more thing to do; it starts with making a little more of the cup you already have in your hand.
