Jessica looked out at the darkening sky. It was early on a summer day, and the air was still cool. Perfect for Jessica’s morning jog.

At the center of this weblike structure is the workhorse. Like a clock that runs constantly, your heart works tirelessly to maintain adequate blood flow to nearly every nook and cranny of your body.

Your heart has 2 to 3 billion cardiac muscle cells, which doesn’t include the cells that run the electrical portion of your heart. It also has four valves and chambers through which this blood flow must pass.

It beats on average 100,000 times in a day and pumps the equivalent of 2,000 gallons of blood every 24 hours. Ever tireless in its quest, your heart strums along and takes marching orders from the nervous system.

One of the more essential minerals to your heart and the rest of the processes within your body is potassium. And without it at the proper levels, things can get serious.

Potassium – Essential for so much.

Sure, you’ve heard of potassium. You may know that your body needs it. But what does your body do with this potassium, why is it so important, and what happens when you don’t get enough?

Potassium is a mineral that is classified as an electrolyte. It’s classified as such because it is highly reactive in water. Once dissolved in water, it creates positively charged ions. This allows it to conduct electricity, which is essential to many processes throughout the body.

However, when things get out of balance, the water from a side with fewer electrolytes will move towards the side with a higher number of electrolytes.

This causes cells to shrink as water moves out of them and can burst as too much water moves into them. If fluid balance gets tilted, it can lead to dehydration and affect the heart and kidneys.

The nervous system: Another vast network within the body that we rarely give thought to is the nervous system. Messages from the nervous system regulate muscles, heartbeat, reflexes, and many more systems and functions throughout the body.

Nerve impulses are generated by sodium ions moving into the cells and potassium ions moving out. The voltage within the cell is changed with this transfer, and a nerve impulse is activated. Therefore, your nervous system is very much affected by your potassium levels.

Muscle and heart contractions: Since the nervous system helps regulate muscle contractions, it only makes sense that altered blood potassium levels will cause weakened muscle contractions. High and low levels can both alter the voltage of nerve cells.
