Avoid skin problems this winter with a proper routine and quality products

It can be painful, itchy, and irritating. Sometimes, there are cracks. At other times, the cracks can widen and start to bleed. All of this will continue and worsen if something isn’t done. Of course, we are talking about your skin, and discussing it this time of year is essential.

The condition of your skin worsening can happen at times. Yet, here we are in winter, and these problems become even more pressing as temperatures drop. Why is that?

Well, cold winter air holds very little moisture. Even if you spend most of the winter inside, the air inside is much dryer than during warmer temperatures. As cold air leaks into your home or office, you are adding dryer air to your space.

The thermostat kicks on and pumps warm air. This air is also very dry. So, essentially, you are surrounded by dryer air than at any other time of the year. And, as you’re aware, this dry air can suck the moisture from your skin.

Without a proper skincare routine, your skin will quickly become dry, wrinkles will become more significant, and you will begin to develop an unpleasant texture to your skin. Allow this to continue; you will soon have cracked and even painful skin.

For most people, this rarely happens. Most individuals will use copious amounts of lotion to counteract this obvious problem. Thus, a skin emergency will be avoided. However, what is the right way to deal with this issue?

Is that it? Slather on massive globs of lotion every day. Doesn’t that seem like a waste? Isn’t there a better way to hydrate your skin?

Well, of course, the answer is yes. There is a better way to care for your skin, which makes more sense. This practical care starts with a simple step – out with the old.

The importance of exfoliating your skin.

Imagine a lovely garden. During the growing season, this garden is filled with aromatic flowers. There are mouthwatering fruits and vegetables. Walking through this garden, you see vibrant colors and textures in all directions. It’s a living, breathing oasis.

Now, as you look around at our garden, with your appetite in your throat and your senses popping - answer this question. Did this incredible diversity of sights and smells happen on its own? The answer to that question, of course, is a resounding NO.

Something as complex as a garden should be planned. It needs to be cared for. And it needs that care regularly. Think about what happens at the end of the growing season. The plants begin to shrivel and die. They wither, they dry up, and their leaves fall to the ground.

The leaves from surrounding trees and other plants also make their way onto the surface of this garden. This layer of fallen fauna will become so thick that you can’t see the soil once spring arrives.

Before anything can be started or planted the following season, this debris needs to be cleared away. The soil needs to be exposed. Once exposed, seeds can be planted, fertilizer can be applied, and life can begin fresh.

Similarly, the surface of your skin should be cleared and refreshed every so often. Your skin loses more cells daily than a garden sheds in leaves yearly.

An average adult loses 30,000 to 40,000 skin cells every sixty seconds. That’s about one million skin cells a day. This is a natural part of your skin's life cycle. As cells die, your body creates new ones. However, not all of these cells fall from the surface of your skin.

Much like the piles of leaves in the garden, these cells need to be removed. If they are not removed, your skin can become dull and flaky. You may notice redness, uneven skin tone, and even clogged pores. On top of these problems, when you apply skin treatments, such as moisturizers, without removing the layer of dead skin, much of what you are using is wasted.

Think about it. If you put fertilizer on a bunch of dead leaves in the garden, very little would make it to the soil. Accordingly, if you remove this layer of dead skin and then apply skin treatments such as moisturizers, you will see much better results.

Remember, your skin is a living organ that needs to be cared for and maintained like a lush garden. Exfoliating your skin is the first step in making sure your next step, moisturizing, is as successful as possible.

Exfoliating the right way

Now, you don’t have to exfoliate your skin. It’s not a hard and fast rule one must stick to. However, if you’ve made it this far, there’s at least a slight chance you’re interested in maintaining soft and healthy skin this winter and beyond. So, let’s look at the two main types of exfoliation to keep your skin free of debris and allow your skincare products the best chance of success.

Chemical: This involves using mild acids or enzymes that break down the bonds between dead skin cells. After the bonds are broken down, the dead skin cells can be washed away. Think of it as pre-treating a stain on your favorite shirt. Just be cautious. Chemical exfoliation could be dangerous because your skin might be sensitive to the chemical used, and irritation could follow.

Physical: This can involve a brush, scrub, or other abrasive materials that physically remove dead skin cells. The physical method is more akin to using a rake on those leaves in the garden. Using only a gentle method when physically exfoliating your skin is critical. Harsh scrubs can cause micro-tears in the skin.

Remember that exfoliating should be part of your skincare routine. However, it’s not for everyday use. An excellent exfoliating ritual shouldn’t need to be used more than three times a week. And some skin types can manage just fine with a once-a-week treatment. There is no need to overdo it.

When used correctly and consistently, you can see visible improvements to your skin, such as:

  • Reduction in fine lines

  • Lighten dark spots

  • Helping to control acne

  • Softer and more radiant skin

So, as you think about ways to improve the health of your skin this winter, consider setting down a solid exfoliating routine followed by rich moisturizing.

My skin used to feel dry and tight, no matter which moisturizer I used. I’ve tried many face creams and they are usually too rich and too heavy for my skin or they don’t provide enough hydration. Well, I am in love with the Essential Lipid Cream. It absorbs beautifully and makes my skin velvety smooth. My skin has never been this happy and never looked this healthy. It is perfect for the cold weather! I use it as a night cream and my skin is moist and soft all night Also, I’ve noticed that my wrinkles are softer and not as deep.
