A study that was published in 2022 in Sustainable Materials and Technologies looked at the use of collagen peptide ingredients that have been extracted from fish scales and used to create a collagen-modified polyester textile. The research suggests that the material retained characteristics of conventional polyester while also showing differences such as hand feel and odor-control properties. Ultimately, this research suggests that the approach may be a potential contribution to circular-economy thinking around aquaculture waste.
An additional study that was published in Marine Drugs investigated collagen that was derived from fish scales. The research findings suggest that the discarded material could potentially be used as a source of collagen-rich material.
This doesn’t mean that a collagen-infused shirt will lead to any specific health outcomes; however, it does show that fish-scale byproducts have a place within the fashion landscape and may be a source of collagen for material applications. The goal is to find another use for a material that might be discarded.
