New Year, New You, New Sleep Quality!

The countdown hits zero, fireworks go off, and we all scream HAPPY NEW YEAR! Another lap around the sun, another long year in the books, and another year of promise and opportunity ahead of us. We all make our New Year’s resolutions, wishing to get our lives on track one way or another. Many of us will put our thoughts into action right away (gym membership sales always skyrocket right at the start of a new year), but others will struggle to commit to making the changes they have promised themselves.

The unfortunate reality for many of us is that New Year’s resolutions just end up being another item (or several items) to add to our “to do” list or our “wish” list. Life for most of us, even with all of its problems, and all of the things we know we can improve on, is somehow familiar and comfortable. Change, even positive change, can feel like a disruption to our state of stability that we’re not always ready to face. So, we often wish for things but then seem to convince ourselves that they are unattainable.

For instance, if you’re one of the 84 million Americans who struggle getting enough sleep and you’re reading this, it’s very likely you’ve set a goal for this year to improve your sleep habits. However, this can easily feel out of reach since it is a little more complicated than putting ourselves to bed earlier or getting in more hours of shut eye. When it comes to sleep, quality is just as important as quantity. The answers aren’t always clear, and we may need to do a little digging, but in the end it will all be worth it.

Making a New Year’s resolution, setting a goal, and determining what to stive for, are all an amazing first step! However, where we get lost sometimes is that once we have set our intention, we must take action to achieve what we have been dreaming of! Improving your sleep is an excellent resolution because doing so can improve your health, wellness, energy, motivation, and mood, just to name a few of the wonderful benefits. These improvements can in turn propel you into chasing the life you have always wanted for yourself, or even just finding more joy in the beautiful life you have already created.
