Frequently asked questions
What do you actually do?
We get people unstuck, especially when it comes to data.
What is the craziest project you worked on?
They are all crazy. Crazy awesome. The next ones are always better than the last.
What is big data?
The term used to mean data that couldn’t fit all at once into memory. If you can open it in a spreadsheet in Excel, it’s not big data. The strange thing about data is that if it’s too big to open on a computer it could be caused by having too many columns, so messy poorly organized data. The definition is further complicated by new approaches where you treat data as a stream of incremental changes that are easier to fit and process, one chunk at a time. To me it becomes a big data problem if we are intentionally or by accident are unable to get a sense of the shape of the data without some fancy “big data” tricks like sampling or aggregating.
What is a data scientist?
Josh Wills once tweeted that a data scientist is a “person who is better at statistics than any software engineer and better at software engineering than any statistician.” It’s a little more complex than that, but that’s close enough.
